A contemporary abstract expressionist, I paint with oils on canvas, linen, or birch panel.
Observing the visual world around me closely I note detail, form, line, light, and colour. Keeping a mental note of these observations that interest me, plus making random notes and sketches, creates the base to inform my paintings.
Rather than create a representational painting, I like to paint a visualization of the essence of what I see. Each painting is built up over a period of months, often sanding back and scraping specific areas to create complex and multiple layers of colour complemented by expressive line and gesture.
Translating my responses to what I see through my artwork utilizing composition, colour, line, and depth drives what I paint. My intent is not tell my viewers how to interpret the paintings, but to allow them space to enter the paintings and create their own visual dialogue.
